Thursday:
Feeling much more cheerful today.
Today was the "hotter than the devil's armpit" one forecast. We stayed inside with the air conditioner struggling. Tim tried to do some washing up (our dishwasher is being professionally examined tomorrow) but hot water on a hot day was too unbearable. We spent a lot of time on computer games.
Around 2:30 it got darker and darker, then we had a nice little storm which cooled things down. We thought it was over and Tim drove the kids over to grandad's, around 10 mins away, and the main part of the storm caught him on the way there (and back again). I was a little worried but they got home safely. Some parts of Sydney are having rather severe weather.
Most of the birds don't visit any more. I stopped feeding the magpies and even shooed the persistent adolescent one away because he was making a mess on my outdoor furniture. The kookaburras just stopped visiting, I don't know whether I wasn't putting out food regularly enough (I didn't like to leave it rotting in the sun) or whether they just didn't need me anymore once nesting season was over, or if they've moved away. Sam the butcher bird does still visit every couple of days, if I have something handy I'll feed him but I don't buy meat especially for him and have it cut and ready like I did at first. And I haven't seen Boris the lizard. I wonder if everyone will be back in Spring?
Today I had some chocolate with my afternoon cup of tea. It wasn't a lapse, it was a planned indulgence. I'll see if it has any negative effect but it seems fine, hasn't sent me into a downward binge spiral. Otherwise healthy food all day. Of more concern to me is the upcoming Sunday, we'll have visitors in the afternoon and then family dinner here, so I'll be providing food. Mostly healthy, but some not. Do I buy any treats that I like, or only things that won't tempt me? Last weekend I wasn't able to stick to just a small amount when we had friends over. Maybe nothing unhealthy I like in the afternoon (when I don't need to be eating anyway), healthy dinner, then have a little bit of dessert right at the end.
My weight has daily fluctuations, as you would expect, but the overall pattern is downward. I don't want to do anything that will sabotage that.

Leftovers
Monday:
Okay, I may or may not have eaten some party leftovers today. We shall gloss over indiscretions. You can't walk off chocolate cheesecake, but I did at least do half an hour walking with Tim. To him, that is not even exercise. I was hot and a bit tired by the end. It was certainly exercise to me.
It was mainly a day of organising, like getting electricity set up to be connected at the new house. Tim had already organised internet, but not unimportant things like water or electricity! He has his priorities.
I'm a bit worried about the weather. We had a big storm last night that battered some areas. It is forecast for rain here on Thursday, and also rain in Sydney on Friday! It will be frustrating if everything gets wet, and removalists have to stomp their soggy boots all over the carpet at both ends. But I'm sure we can manage. And maybe it won't actually rain while we are loading/unloading.

Stormy weather
Tuesday:
My dad was supposed to be visiting this week but can't because he's sick, and has been for weeks. Not sure exactly what with, he had some tests done yesterday. I'm trying not to worry too much. My dad lives quite a long way away and he usually visits every school holidays for a few days. We hardly ever go to him, it's tricky with Tim's work and too far for a weekend visit. He's got his girlfriend there looking after him (my parents divorced when I was six, and dad's second marriage ended years ago), but his health hasn't been good for a few years now. I always thought he'd die before mum, but he's held on through heart bypass and diabetes and who knows what else. He brings a box full of medication when he visits, and washes the pills down with wine. It's hard not to worry.
The kids and I had a busy morning, visiting the library and various shops. It is really windy outside, some trees down here but much worse on the coast. In Sydney it is complete chaos with major storms and three people have died and houses have been washed away. Here last night the wind was raging outside. Even today, it is a lot calmer but not pleasant. Not a day to spend outside, we hurried from place to place. The kids spent the afternoon anti-tidying the interior of the house. I did some deskwork and huddled in my jumper.
I made things difficult for myself with water intake today. I had a cup of tea with breakfast and then we were out all morning. At lunchtime I still had a whole day's drinking to go. But I just kept refilling my glass over and over and right now (just after dinner) I've had seven cups of water, three cups of tea, and a bowl of soup. Not bad! I'll easily have another glass of water before bed. That's pretty much what I did all afternoon; drank, and wore a path in the carpet back and forth to the bathroom.
I realised this afternoon that I wasn't feeling miserable. Isn't that nice! I've had a few hard days lately, but I feel good today.
I just recorded my food for the day all at once on fitbit, and it told me I'd gone over by several hundred calories. I was dumbfounded, I thought I'd done really well. I checked down the list and there it was right at the bottom; 250 grams of zucchini (I made zoodles to have with bolognaise instead of spaghetti) - over 500 calories!! Are you kidding me? There is no way zucchini has 2 calories a gram, more than most meats. I had chosen the first entry, just "zucchini" with no modifiers. I went back and changed it to "zucchini - raw" (I had weighed it raw) and it told me 250 grams of raw zucchini was 25 calories. That is more like it! 536 vs 25 for the same thing. So what on earth was the other type of zucchini? Marinated in duck fat?
Report card:
Diet: Great. Second low carb day achieved. High carb/low fat day tomorrow. I'm interested to see how that affects my hunger levels.
Exercise: Poor. Didn't do any. Around 6,000 steps going about my day.
Water: Excellent.
Sleep. Good compliance. It was bad night's sleep turn, though. I would love to start getting more than six or seven hours a night, and for the good night to be more than every second one.
Mental health: Good.

Moving around again
Tuesday:
My ankle felt a lot better this morning and I walked the kids to school with only a few twinges. I spent the next couple of hours alternating between standing activities (housework) and sitting activities (reading emails, cup of tea etc). Then I went to the shops to buy my kids some new clothes and it turned into a three hour marathon. I spent over $300 and probably looked at every item of kids' clothing in the four big department stores in Canberra city. That three hours did include a lunch break and lots of standing looking, but also a fair bit of brisk walking between shops. My ankle was just fine.
It had been a beautiful morning, I didn't even need a jumper, but the sky had become very cloudy by the time I was driving home, and when I was walking to pick up the kids from school half an hour later the sky was black with ominous rumbles and flashes of lightening. I was a bit optomistic about my chances of getting back home before it stormed, it started to sprinkle rain while we were still at the school. I wasn't worried about getting rained on, but with such a warm day I was scared we would get hailed on. So a friend who had driven to get her kids dropped mine home, there was no room in the car for me but I could get home a lot quicker by myself than with the kids. I jogged (ie, jogged bits and walked bits) which was a bit of strain on the ankle but I made it ok and got home at the same time as the kids, in a very light spatter of rain.
And that is about all the rain we got. Not even enough for the garden fairies to bathe in. All that thunder and lightening was just big talk with nothing to back it up.
Sydney, on the other hand, which is a little over three hours drive away, had a huge storm about an hour before that with trees down and big hailstones. So I wasn't wrong about the danger of hail. Maybe it hit other parts of Canberra too, I only saw Sydney news tonight not local news (while Canberra is the political capital of Australia it only has about 350,000 people -- half of whom are public servants -- Sydney is much bigger so we get their news as well).
Anyway, health & weight-loss wise the point of all this is that my ankle is pretty much fine and I'll be back into proper exercise tomorrow. Of course it is hurting a little bit now after all that activity today. And my knee seems to be a bit sore ... oh shut up.
