Wednesday:
Last night was my husband's turn with the tummy bug so I guess it wasn't the food. We are all feeling a bit wiped out this morning. Queasy and woozy.
Tim mentioned yesterday that a colleague of his is going on a liquid food diet. He is a bit dumbfounded by this, firstly it sounds like such a stupid diet but also she is slender and the most attractive person in the office and therefore doesn't "need" to diet.
But the thing is, she probably feels she does need to take extreme measures to maintain her slender figure. I don't know her at all, so I'm making all sorts of judgements based on this one thing, but I'm guessing she bases a lot of her identity of being thin and beautiful. Enough to do unhealthy things to make sure she doesn't lose that part of herself.
I would love to be as slender as I'm imagining she is, but not enough to make it pursuing it my whole lifestyle. I was going to say I wouldn't risk my health for it, but that's kind of a silly thing to say considering I regularly risk my health more with a "normal" unhealthy diet.
I can't really claim to have been on my diet at all the past few days. I just can't get motivated.

Feeling thinner
Friday:
Today it is raining. And cold, of course. Raining and cold. So I did not put the puppy outside with a bone and go for a walk.
Also, Thor has gone back to sleeping all day. Maybe because it is a brumous day? Wait, what? I thought brumous meant cloudy, but I just looked it up and it means foggy or misty, wintery. Well it is certainly wintery, but not foggy. Just gloomy clouds.
Today for lunch I had a small serve of pasta with some chicken breast, sun-dried tomato pesto and a splash of cream. It was delicious. And 500 calories! Maybe I should check before I cook... Each of those four elements is quite high calorie and they sure add up. I kept to my calories for the day though, even if "supper" was picking at the leftover roast.
Apparently the latest cover of Time magazine is about how we should eat butter and how authorities were completely wrong about demonising fat. My friend who did her dietetics degree about five years ago is very anti-saturated-fat and pro-carbs, and they may still be teaching that, but I think that is lagging way behind all the new studies. Nowadays it is trans-fats and sugar that are the evil ones, natural fats are fine. Sugar was once just "empty calories", now it is addictive crack that makes you eat more and more. Trans-fats were originally promoted as a healthy alternative to saturated fats, now we know they are far worse.
It's kind of scary that they will probably change their minds again in another five years. There is a line from a movie or TV show where the high-fat cook shrugs and says authorities will soon be telling us we're not eating enough bacon.
I've been writing my "Advantage Response Cards" i.e. why I want to lose weight. I've come up with many reasons, some not so obvious. Like bras being more comfortable because they aren't digging into back fat.
I'm actually feeling a bit thinner today. It's a nice feeling.

America's Biggest Loser
Saturday:
We don't get America's Biggest Loser here but I've seen the pictures and the controversy.
Firstly, I feel like the poor girl was getting criticised (presumably) for being too fat and now for being too thin - no matter what she does she just isn't good enough for the world. Yes she is a little thin now, I find curvy more aesthetically pleasing, but someone online said she is only 3 lbs under the "normal weight" range, which doesn't seem dangerously unhealthy to me.
Secondly, I've just watched the opening ceremony to the Winter Olympics. Here are several hundred people who have spent months or years on extreme exercise regimes and probably very strict diets, in order to do something a lot more dangerous than standing on a stage. Lots of risk of broken bones and even occasional death. Yet we don't criticise them for getting up at 5am every day to exercise and cutting out junk food, we praise their persistence and commitment. Going for a major goal can be very demanding and not necessarily the best way to be supremely healthy in your old age. But so much better (I think) in all these cases than being obese and doing no physical activity.
And thirdly, I don't know her, I don't know if she has any kind of eating disorder now. But you could just as easily argue that she had an eating disorder before she went on the show, a disordered and unhealthy relationship with food, as evidenced by her obesity. So if she turns out to have some issues now, I don't think they were caused by the show. I think it would be an existing tendency that has turned into a different channel. Like my brother, who has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, started out with germ phobia and hand washing, and when he managed to supress a lot of that behaviour it burst out again into full-blown hoarding. But the winner was probably just pushing herself hard to make sure she would win.
So those are my three cents worth.
