Icy toes

Monday:

The reboot Duromine effect has worn off, I ate very little for several days while sick then ate a lot for several days to catch up... back to normal now. Whatever normal is. Weight bounced back up a little to 70.2 kg, still comfortably under what it was two weeks ago. But I want to get back under 70 kg!

It is so cold at this second workplace. The main part of the library isn't too bad, but the staff office and tearoom are freezing. My feet ache. It's winter here now, icy and rainy, but I think it's warmer outside than in the tearoom! Cold drafts everywhere. There is a tiny fan heater the staff use to try to stay warm. It's a small library, only two staff at a time not including me. But at least six desks in the office!? I had a good chat with Matthew about getting a job, he did the same degree as me a few years ago (same teachers!) and a temp job turned into his current more or less permanent status. He trained as a High School teacher originally, but had a chair thrown at him by a student on his first day. Six months confirmed it wasn't the job for him.

I just lodged my last assignment. Now all I have is my teacher coming out to assess me in the workplace, in two weeks. Should be ok, but I can get flustered sometimes.

I feel mostly better from my flu but my coughing keeps me awake at night. Aiden's got a runny nose now, crossed fingers he fights it off.

Book club

Tuesday:

Nothing much today. I realised I forgot to weigh myself yesterday, again, but I do every couple of days so I know my weight has continued to creep up. 82.9 kg today I think.

Today should have been my book club. I missed it for the third month in a row (after going once). This time it was a book I wanted to read but they didn't seem to have it for me at the library and none were available. Except today I picked up the book for next month and it was behind the counter instead of in the "reserved books" under my name like it was previously... so they probably did have it last month after all! Anyway, not having read Go Set a Watchman I decided not to go. I don't think it really matters, people turn up or they don't, it's not like it really inconveniences the other people either way. Although it's nice to have a robust reliable group. I will make an effort to go next month.

One of the other pool contractors called this afternoon to follow up and I told him we'd decided not to go with his company, Iguana. He asked which one we had chosen and I hesitated because it's none of his business but then told him Mirage because why not? He gave an odd sort of laugh and we said goodbye. I've been worrying about that laugh! But I think it was because people from Mirage went on to found Iguana - probably this guy and his son. So I chose his old employer instead of him. This guy was nice but at the end of the interview when he was here, he went into a bit of a tirade about a different company (Blue Haven) and how terrible they were. Maybe it was just a friendly warning but it seemed unprofessional and was one of the reasons we didn't go with him. He went on and on, and kept coming back to the subject. It made Tim and I a bit uneasy.

I was feeling quite unwell last night but am fine today, I think it likely was the radioactive stuff. Presumably it's all flushed out now.

We have been in this house about nine months now, I realised today that there is no place on the property to sit in the winter sun in the afternoon. It is all shaded. We plan to get rid of a couple of trees in the backyard so hopefully that will clear a spot. Of course we want lots of shade in summer, but it would be nice to have a corner somewhere to sit outside on clear winter days.

Last night a dreamed about the house I grew up in, and realised this morning that I left there 30 years ago, when I was 16. Thirty years! My goodness that is a long time.

Winter

Wednesday:

First day of winter!

I had a better sleep last night (I think). I kept the CPAP on for 4.5 hours, only slightly more than the night before, but I did feel I slept more of the night. The CPAP still made my nose sweaty and itchy but not sore like the first night. Got to lose this weight so I don't have to use it any more!

I ate well today, except I got a bit impatient for dinner and ate a big hunk of cheese. But no junk food. My plan is to eat clean all through June. One month at a time.

Almost spring

Monday:

I was finally feeling much better over the weekend. I did a little gardening in the spring-like weather on Sunday. Today I did my first dancing for well over a week. I made it to half an hour and had to stop, dizzy and exhausted. Oh well, I'll have to build back up to it. I am way behind my husband on the Crew Challenge of Dance Central 2.

I am so looking forward to spring. I am sick of the cold and rain and general dreariness. We've had a couple of nice days now, where it was pleasant to be outdoors (still in a jumper, though). I miss being able to go for a walk, it has generally been too miserable to spend any time outside. But soon! Already, it is still light for most of my driving-the-kids-around after school instead of the early darkness of mid-winter.

I tore my shoulder tendon nearly three years ago, and because I had lots of ongoing shoulder problems anyway I didn't realise what the problem was - I kept using it for months and trying to keep it moving instead of resting it - until I finally had an ultrasound. It took quite a while to heal and then I was left with a very stiff shoulder. I haven't been able to do up my own bra for all that time, three years!, which is particularly annoying after exercise when I have no one to help me. Well, I still can't, but I've made a lot of progress recently. For a long time I couldn't get my hand behind my back at all, now I can at least touch my thumb to the small of my back. Not so far from the bra hooks. I don't know if I'll ever have full mobility back - I only have about 90% in the right shoulder after problems 13 years ago - but honestly I will be so happy when I can do up my own bra again. I do have one front-fastening one, but it is an unsupportive post-mastectomy thing (I haven't had a mastectomy) that was the only one I could find. Anyway, I am trying to get some mobility back in the shoulder and it seems to be working.

Feeling ready to come out of hibernation.
