Stuck

Sunday:

This morning we went to see Jo in hospital. She's recovering well from the operation and will go home in a couple of days. She seemed in good spirits, considering, although she still feels that the 4 week delay since they found the mass might have made all the difference. Also, rather oddly, that her 50 years of smoking didn't cause the lung cancer. She sees the oncologist on Monday to find out what happens next.

Then we went to the Hardware store, which also has a plant nursery, and bought some garden stuff. We were there a lot longer than we expected and it was nearly 2pm when we left and I hadn't eaten since breakfast about six hours before! Tim and the kids had a sausage sandwich at the hardware store, and the kids also had hot chocolates at the hospital, but I was trying to stick to healthy food so waited until we got home. By then I was feeling a bit sick and trembly and almost teary, I assume my blood sugar was low. I'd planned to make a nice soup for lunch, no time for that obviously, I just shovelled whatever I could find into my mouth. I could never do a fast, at least not without bad consequences, I don't understand how people can feel good not eating. I feel horrible!

When I recovered, Tim and I did some work in the garden. Mostly digging up a huge rock and two huge plant root systems that had been left in the ground and were sticking up now that I'd levelled the dirt. He vacuumed the pool but unfortunately the filter thing got stuck in the skimmer box and we can't get it out! I've looked online and it's not uncommon, sometimes you have to break it (it's plastic) to get it out and buy a new one. I hope it doesn't come to that.

It's storming outside now. There was a forecast of rain for today, I'm glad it waited until late afternoon so we got some time outside.

Hungry

Thursday:

Brrrr it's cold!

Yesterday we finally got the heat pump for our pool plugged in. We turned it on for a few hours (we have no intention of running it all winter, it's to extend the swimming season into spring and autumn) and it seemed very quiet to me. I went over to our neighbour's house and told him it was on so he could listen and tell us what he thought, let us know if the noise was a problem. I was in and out of the house all afternoon, digging in the garden, so if he came over to speak to me I missed him. And I was out all today. So still don't know his opinion or if we need to get the heat pump (huge thing, and plumbed into the other pool equipment) moved to further away from the fence.

The tiler broke his 50 millionth promise to come and clean up yesterday, it's been over a month now I think. I didn't want to let him off the hook but it's taking up too much valuable real estate in my head! I plan to put a bad review online but otherwise let it go. Aiden and I attacked the stains (I think it's concrete dust?) all over our new rockwork with a scrubbing brush and a bucket of water, and it comes off with a bit of elbow grease. Or we could hire a pressure washer from the hardware store, maybe. I'm stick of waiting for him and stressing about it. Let it go.

And the other ongoing thing is this skip bin still out the front. I think I've called four times and texted twice. Yesterday he said, 'oh didn't the guys pick it up on Saturday? It was on the list.' 'Well no, they didn't, it's still there.' 'Ok, we'll pick it up today or tomorrow.' Well guess what tomorrow is over and it's still there. I guess I call again tomorrow. It's kind of funny really, but a pain.

After two days when I felt the Duromine wasn't working as well, I then had two good days, but today it seemed to have no affect at all. Hungry, tired. I've eaten my calories for the day and haven't had dinner yet. And slept on the train this afternoon. And I'm very cold, but I can't blame that on the Duromine, that is just winter. I am really really craving KFC right now and I don't know if I'll be able to resist when I go and pick up the kids from sport. I think it's time to increase my dose up to 30mg, which is what the doctor suggested I do after a week (it's been more than a week). I can always go back if the side effects are bad or something, but I seem to need more than the 15mg. Most people do. I'll give it a try.

Offending the Gods

Tuesday:

The God of Nightsweats took offence at me saying I could deal with it, and I had a very unpleasant night due to His retaliation. Four or five in one night! So instead of saying I'm fine I can handle it, I will say oh woe is me I am so tired and headachy. That should appease Him.

I've started the planning stages of book two. Tim is still reading book one and I'll use his feedback to make some (hopefully final) changes but in the meantime I need to get to work on the next book. I did write a chapter ages ago but without really knowing where it was going... so far you could say my outline is "main characters track down and defeat the villain who was revealed at the end of book one". Not really very detailed!

My hunger dial is turned up to 11 at the moment. I am eating anything and everything, never satisfied. It rather disconcerting.

My doctor appointment has been moved up to Thursday, which is awesome.

Thursday

Thursday:

Today was mostly devoted to catching up on some housework stuff. Not very exciting. I'm getting better sleep but I continue to feel hungry a lot of the time, it's probably the change of seasons as it's become a lot colder here. My body wants to lay down another layer of fat for warmth!

I noticed today how oddly I walk now. Months of a sore foot, trying to keep certain parts of my foot off the ground, means I lurch along. Even when it's not hurting or I'm in public trying to look normal, I'm used to my hobbling gait. I swear, when the foot pain is over I'll be running every chance I get!

Hungry

Tuesday:

Another good night of sleep. Sleep is awesome!

I had to get Aiden a new sports uniform and decided my foot would be fine for me to walk up to the school. I was so wrong. Limped home 45 mins later after what should have been a 25 min round trip.

I'm writing this as I wait for my dinner. I had to go pick up Jasmine from a friend's house right in the middle of roasting a chicken, I turned the oven off while out. So now I am very hungry smelling delicious lemony chicken that isn't cooked yet. I am very much looking forward to it.

Tomorrow I see the counsellor therapist person. That will be interesting. They called today to confirm the appointment and ask if I could come at 3pm instead, which I couldn't because I have children coming home from school. 1pm it is.

I feel like I'm progressing well with my book. If you're not up to speed with my writing adventures, I spent a bit over a year writing my first novel (after many false starts throughout my life, it has been my ambition forever). Then I got a group of writers to critique it at the start of last year. That was very confronting, but after I recovered I agreed with most of what they said. Then my mother died. Then my father died. Then we moved house. Basically I didn't touch my novel for a year. But the editing/rewriting process is going smoothly now. I'm sure there will be another round of improvements after this, but I'm getting there. I want it to be the best (first) book I can write before I offer it for publication. It's fantasy fiction, with dragons and magic and shipwreck and minotaurs. This is a long process, but that is pretty normal especially for a first book.

Sauerkraut

Tuesday:

I walked Aiden up to his school today because he had a few extra things to carry, he rode his bike in circles around me while I carried the extra bag. Then I walked home again VERY fast, because as usual I desperately needed to pee. Is my bladder especially tiny or is this normal? At least I got a brisk walk in.

Yesterday I had a perfect food day with around 7 serves of vegetables plus one fruit, but I still didn't make my fibre goal (22.5 grams, by far the closest I've come to the recommended 25-30 grams, most days I'm around 15). Is it possible to hit fibre goals without eating lots of starchy foods? This morning I added a fibre supplement to my water, but had to laugh when I recorded it: it added 1.5 grams of fibre. The raspberries on my yoghurt added 7.6! I think I'll stick to real food. Maybe more fruit.

I had a useful writing session, I've finished rewriting the opening to my novel (the first draft, at least) and I'm up to where that merges with what I had already written. Now I just have to go through the whole thing and make all the changes I've planned. "Just." Ha. Lots of work to do. Guitar was also good today. I really feel like I'm making progress.

Breakfast was yoghurt with fresh raspberries, a grating of dark chocolate, and a cup of tea.

By mid-morning I was starving! I delayed until rather early lunch, then served myself chicken, cheese, cucumber and sauerkraut. And a cup of tea. I've been wanting to try kimchi (Korean picked vegetables) for a while but couldn't find any, so thought I'd try sauerkraut which is Polish pickled cabbage. Actually according to the jar, the ingredients are just cabbage and salt. Hmm? Anyway I had a taste and it was ok, very low calorie, and a vegetable, so I served myself out a big helping. I only ate a few mouthfuls of this! Maybe it's supposed to be eaten with something, as a condiment? On meat maybe? I have no idea. Anyway, it didn't seem to be something you eat big forkfuls of by itself.

Apologies to all the Poles who are recoiling in horror at my treatment of sauerkraut, it is not a big ethnic group in Australia so I haven't come across this food before.

By early afternoon I was starving again! So hungry. Yet yesterday I got through the day comfortably with only three meals. I thought about that this afternoon. Of course hunger can vary due to many things, but one thing I realised is that yesterday I had big helpings of filling vegetables at every meal. Not today. I will attend to this in future.

I tried to stave off the hunger pangs with a pear.
Still hungry. Had some cheese and cashews. Finally not ravenous! But I would have been better with lots of low calorie vegetables with my meals.

I didn't make that mistake with dinner. I had a pork steak with mushrooms in a garlic cream sauce (not too much sauce) with asparagus, broccoli, tomato, cucumber and carrot. Very full after dinner.

Sunday

Sunday:

I weighed in for my next dietbet. I'm up 200 grams since yesterday. My starting weight for the dietbet is actually a little higher that my "true" weight because I have to be clothed for the photos!

Really exhausted all day. Probably a combination of bad food and the usual tiredness I get from hosting a dinner party. I had several mini-naps (too noisy to sleep with guitars and children and everything) but could hardly keep my eyes open.

I was definitely craving fresh healthy food. I tried the poached eggs function on my egg cooker and it worked well. Eggs, cucumber and a nectarine for breakfast.

Tomato soup for lunch.

A cup of tea in the afternoon (still no sugar!). I wasn't very hungry all day. Then around 5 pm as I was preparing the roast for dinner, I was suddenly ravenous! No wonder, I'd only had around 300 calories so far. I could have had a little snack to tide me over, but I knew there was a delicious dinner on the way if I waited so I did! And I piled up my plate. And wolfed it down. I didn't eat quite all this, because the kids stole half my diced mixed vegetables (curses that they ever discovered how good that is!).

Hopefully I'm now fully recovered from the excesses of yesterday.

Hungry

Thursday:

Oh, the ups and downs.

I had a much better sleep last night. I was able to keep the CPAP on for longer, didn't need to use the bathroom until 6am, slept much more soundly. So that was great.

Unfortunately the reason I had to take the CPAP off was a bad sore throat (air blowing in makes it worse). Still sore all day today. And I was all crampy and achy from the time of the month. Basically felt ill and yucky despite the good sleep.

Then I was dreading getting on the scale. I have to lose significant weight every single day until Saturday to win this first month of dietbet. Is that so important, I hear you ask? Well, yes. Not the $12.50 that is the stake for this month, but the fact of achieving or failing. I won my first dietbet, then lost my second one when my mum died and I stopped prioritising losing weight which I think was a perfectly reasonable decision. But I no longer have that excuse. This month I slacked off my efforts in the middle weeks and then I'm hampered by water retention in this final week. The hormonal fluctuations will happen every month and I need to take that into account! I can't expect to lose all the weight in a couple of days at the end of each round. I need to be consistent all month.

And this morning my weight was up a bit. Up, not down. Too much salt yesterday? (Vegemite is 120% salt, approximately.) Too many calories? Sudden increase in exercise confusing my body? I don't know. But the goal is further away, almost impossible, and that is really depressing. I don't want to fail. I really don't want to fail two in a row.

I wanted to crawl back in bed and stay there. And order pizza and eat it in bed. But I decided that wouldn't help.

So I went to the gym. The parking meter wouldn't accept my pass, it recognised me and my face came up on the screen (which was a bit off-putting, actually) but I was denied access. I could have taken the easy way out, taken it as a message that I wasn't meant to go to the gym today. But no, I trudged in there and got it sorted. Got a parking slip, put in in the car. Back into the gym. Got onto an elliptical and hiked through Arizona. I committed to 30 mins and ended up doing 36, to finish the section. No sprinting, just slogging on through. I guess I should be proud of at least doing something. I've got to 6000 steps, not stellar.

When I got home I was ravenous. Before even taking a shower, I ate my lunch. A small serve of leftover pork casserole and a big salad of raw undressed vegetables. An apple. I felt I needed some fat so a piece of cheese. And a cup of tea. Finally satisfied. 447 calories which is ok, it was all good healthy food, but a huge volume. I'm not sure where I fitted it all.

My big news of the day is that we paid off our mortgage! Some of the money from my mum's estate came through, enough for us to pay it out. We'd previously made payments with money from both our grandparents, so we were ahead. I still have to fill in some official paperwork, but the money is paid and the house belongs to us. It's kind of amazing to think we have no debt now. None. I've probably been continuously in debt since I bought my first car twenty years ago.

Yet money can't buy everything. It couldn't stop mum dying from breast cancer. It can't make me thin and healthy (I suppose a lot of surgery and personal training would help, but I'd still have to go through the process and a lot of work). It can't make me a critically acclaimed writer (not without a lot more money than I have!).

Still, it is nice to have for the things it can do.

Late afternoon I got hungry again. And ate a nectarine and two cups of vegetable broth. And some sultanas and dried apricots. And cheese. And more cheese. And chocolate.

Is this the time of the month or the exercise or what? I can't seem to control my hunger. I haven't even worked out how many calories that was yet.

I had most of my dinner. Still a bit full from my binge. Which worries me that I will be hungry later. I am trying to fill up on healthy foods, but they are just not doing the job.

Report Card:
Diet: Poor. I assume I'm way over with calories. Have probably killed whatever tiny chance I had of winning this round of dietbet.
Exercise: Good. I'm trying to be proud of myself for an honest attempt.
Water: Ok. Poor. Still a couple of glasses to go.
Sleep: Better. Good.
Mental health: Up and down all day. Mostly down. My throat is still sore and I'm worried I'm getting sick. Sad about failing dietbet. And each round is cumulative so I still have to lose this month's goal as well as next month's!

It has been a difficult day.

Unexpected walk

Wednesday:

My annual parking pass for the Arboretum finally arrived so I was going to go and write at the café there this morning, but apparently there was a five-car pile up near there and the traffic was really bad so I ended up going to the lake for a walk. I was dressed right for a walk because I'd planned to go on a short stroll at the Arboretum anyway before getting down to work, but I didn't have a drink with me or sunscreen on my arms (only SPF face-cream on my face and chest).

It took me a while to get into a good walking rhythm. It was a really hot day, even at 9.30am, and I don't like the heat much, and the flies were really bugging me. But after a while I started enjoying it. I was listening to a zombie mission and my own music playlist and there was lots to look at and find pleasure in. The circuit between the two bridges used to be 5K but they've done some work on the paths and the road crossings and I think it is significantly further now - actually just checked my zombie app and I walked 5.73 km - at around 4.5 km/h, which for me is brisk walk. So it took me well over an hour. About one km from the end I suddenly ran out of energy. I could barely drag myself back to the car, and I would have stopped to rest except I was also really hungry and thirsty. There are bubblers (drinking fountains) at intervals around the lake but I'd only had one drink early on and then didn't find another one in the last bit when I needed it.

I had a banana in the car so I sat in the shade and ate that, and then I had a dilemma. I was really thirsty, and there were a couple of food outlets within a couple of hundred meters of my car where I could have bought a bottle of water. But I was also ravenously hungry, and I didn't trust myself to make good choices if I exposed myself to the sight and smell of calorie-laden food. I'd already decided not to go into the library to write, I was too hot and tired and sweaty, so I just went home. All the way home I imagined tearing into a slice of roast beef! I used that to keep my mind off more starchy and sugary foods. As soon as I got home I had two glasses of water and ate my lunch (even though it was only 11.15) of leftover roast. Delicious.

The soles of my feet were very sore by the end, I need to toughen them up again with more long walks. My hips didn't hurt while walking but they were very stiff and sore when I got out of the car at home after sitting for a quarter of an hour after the walk, and still hurt now two hours later. Got to get this body a lot fitter and more flexible! And maybe start carrying sunscreen in the car; the sides of my neck, exposed by a ponytail and not covered in face cream, are a bit pink.

So I've done my exercise for the day, 9000 steps so far, but that doesn't absolve me from my other work so I'd better get on with it.

Ravenous

Saturday:

There may be more than one thing going on here, for instance it has been really cold for three days which also affects hunger. But yesterday I went back on carbs for the first time in a week. And this morning I woke up utterly ravenous.

Usually I struggle to eat breakfast at all and will be full with a piece of fruit. But this morning I wanted warm oats. Unfortunately after FOUR supermarkets yesterday I called the company and found they don't make my favourite anymore and the one I tried wasn't nice at all. So I had two pieces of toast. Then some grapes. Then chocolate. For breakfast. And was still hungry.

After a short break I had some more carbs and a cup of tea. With sugar.

Not sure how to deal with this.

Low carb was making me tired and unhappy. Eating carbs again (quinoa last night for goodness sake) is making me binge. Will these feelings of insatiable hunger pass and let me get back to normal?

Or maybe it is nothing to do with the carbs. This is the second day of autumn and it's suddenly freezing, feels more like winter, so maybe I'm just trying to lay down some fat deposits for warmth. It's still a few days to TTOM so it shouldn't be that.

Hungry.

Jump high

Thursday:

Probably too little too late, but I had a healthy day today (with weigh-in tomorrow). I tackled Kinect Adventures this morning and got platinum on the last three intermediate games and then on advanced for a couple. As usual it left me dripping and far more exhausted than anything else I do. For the last 15 mins I was only getting silver (not even gold!) because I was too tired to move fast enough or jump high enough. Great workout. I've earned 40 activity PP this week, which I am happy with especially considering we were away all weekend.

I ate well too. I got pretty hungry in the afternoon but had some cereal, and only went over my daily PP by 2.

My weight is down a little from last week so I hope for a small loss, maybe enough to get me back to where I was two weeks ago!

More challenges this weekend as we will have houseguests. I will cook healthy meals but there are bound to be snacks. I hope they only bring stuff I don't like!

A sunny day

Monday:

I woke up a bit sore after yesterday's exertions so after walking the kids to school I went for an extended stroll (it was also the first sunny day we've had for about a month, something like 75% of my state is flooded or under flood warning). Once I had loosened up, I came home and did another hour on the Kinect.

Trying to get platinum is so much harder than gold! This is going to take me a while, but that is ok. I certainly can't re-wear any of my gym gear after these sessions, they are utterly dripping with sweat, so I must be doing something right.

Later in the day I started to stiffen up. My shoulders are quite sore -- for a wonder NOT from RSI or torn rotator cuff -- in what I think of as my "flight muscles". The ones I would be using if I had wings. My legs are also sore, particularly the muscles around the knees. So I decided not to try for an extra exercise session tonight.

I got really hungry after the morning workout. I ate morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea in quick succession. I had a second afternoon tea when the kids got home from school, half a packet of rice crackers, which was a bit excessive. If I need more food to fuel the exercise that is ok but I have to make sure it is healthy stuff. Most of it was. After dinner I had a diet chocolate mousse, taking me 10 PP into my weekly allowance. I could easily eat a lot more. Mmmm, cheese.

Ok, I just ate some cheese. And grapes. But I earned more than I over-consumed today.

3 pm slump

Monday:

I went to the gym this morning and did BodyPump for the first time in weeks. I used to look forward to it, now it just seems like work. And it is hard for me to get to the gym during school holidays. But I need strength training as well as cardio, so I will try to get to a class at least once a week.

I did ok in the class but my shoulder still troubles me quite a bit, it frustrates me that the shoulder holds me back in a lot of the exercises rather than just lack of muscle strength. I need to remind myself of how much better I am than this time last year when I was in a lot of pain all the time. It's a slower process than I would like, but I have improved a lot and it will heal eventually. Probably the most frustrating thing is that I still can't do up my own bra at the back.

I had a bit of a struggle with hunger pangs in the afternoon. I had eaten a reasonable amount of calories, but what I'd had wasn't particularly healthy. No vegetables all day, very low carb, low nutrition (like cruskits). It really makes a difference to the 3 pm slump! I had a big fruit salad for afternoon tea and some other less healthy snacks and managed to last until dinner without eating everything in the house. Then I had fish and salad for dinner and have stayed under my calorie limit for the day which is a real victory. I definitely need to make sure I have vegetables at lunch time.

My husband and daughter don't like fish so we don't have it often, and I am not that keen on it either, but lately I've been trying to have it occasionally and I just cook something else for them. My son loves fish. Tonight we had the nicest fish I've had for ages. It was barramundi (I just googled it to see if it is found outside Australia, apparently it is mainly around this area but is also known as Asian seabass or seaperch. It likes both salt and fresh water, and warm weather.), I just baked the fillets in the oven on a greaseproof sheet with slices of lemon on top. Really tender and delicious, I will certainly be cooking it again. Aiden loved it too. I generally struggle to know which fish to buy, because I don't like a "fishy" taste -- this was a good one.
