Quitting Weight Watchers

Saturday:

I have been on the Weight Watchers program for five months now, and I wrote a post two months ago saying that I was going to stick with it even though my weight loss was so slow - slow is better than nothing, right? Well over the past week I have been rethinking that decision, and this morning I cancelled my membership.

My lowest weight was nearly two months ago, with a cumulative loss of 3.4 kg. A loss of around a kg a month was slow but still enough to keep me paying the $69 a month. But since then my weight has bounced up and down with no significant loss. This week, after some very indulgent eating, my weight went back up 2.1 kg (4.6 pounds) in 5 days. My total cumulative weight loss over five months with WW is now 1.2 kg.

I'm not blaming WW, I'm sure it works for many. I am the one who makes every decision about what I put in my mouth and how much I exercise. But clearly it is not helping me. It has not inspired me enough to lose weight.

So what is next? Well, I joined the gym last week and I am going to focus on exercise for a while. I need to improve my body fitness. Twice this week I have woken with a very sore upper back, I don't know why, and today I can hardly move my arms without wincing because it pulls on my back muscles. Obviously they are so out of shape that even turning over in my sleep can strain them. I want to feel healthier and sleep better. I don't want to wallow in junk food (like I did this week) but I do want to relax about what I can and can't eat.

All my weigh-ins will now be at home. Today I was 78 kg. I touched 75 kg twice in May and I still want to get back down to that as a first step. Maybe I should stop weighing myself every day. Dunno. But my plan is to exercise a lot. It is school holdiays now and very cold outside but I'll be dragging the kids along to the gym, creche when Gecko isn't on. Can't this weekend as I don't have the car, but hopefully it will warm up enough for us to go to the park and run around this afternoon. Maybe I can lose some weight without feeling deprived and miserable. And a failure.

Arg, I am still clearly focused on my weight. I need some NSVs (non-scale victories). Want to get fit.

Last day of term

Friday:

Yet again, I didn't make it to my Weight Watchers meeting. My excuse was that I didn't have time for breakfast this morning (I was making popcorn for the kids to take to a last-day-of-term party) so I had to have it after walking them to school and then I didn't want to rush eating ... but the other reason was that I have put on about 1 kg this week and didn't want to make it official. Coward.

I did 30 mins on the treadmill yesterday while the kids were doing Gecko but I didn't manage to run this time. It was a bit of a struggle to even walk at a decently brisk pace on a slight incline. Sigh. But I'll just keep at it and get my fitness back. Gecko has two long sessions a week during the school holidays so I will still get to go to the gym.

I was feeling a bit down today, maybe about the weekend. I had been a bit resistant to us going away but eventually got my head around it and we got it all organised. Then mum called yesterday to say she had been/still was really sick, probably with the same flu I had. So she can't take the kids for the weekend. Tim has committed to helping his brother so he is going to go alone while I stay home with the kids. Everyone else is busy and the things I was going to do weren't kid-friendly and we didn't have accomodation for them so it is just easier to stay home. But it means I miss out on some stuff and also don't get to see my husband all weekend and that is usually practically the only time I do see him. And I'm a bit worried about mum with no-one to look after her. But I'm sure she'll rest better without me & the kids there.

WW weigh-in week 14: 77.5 kg, down 0.1 kg

Friday:

I find it strange and silly that they still call this my week 14. It is my 14th weigh-in because that is how many meetings I've been to, but I have actually been using Weight Watchers for (I think) 22 weeks. I've just missed quite a few meetings. I missed the past 2 due to being so sick, so this 0.1 kg loss (essentially a STS) is for a 3 week period. It is that TOM, and I'm determined to start exercising on Monday, so I am going for a decent loss this week.

Some big news at the meeting this morning, they are ending the Friday morning timeslot in a few weeks. It only started 6 months ago and they have never got the minimum number of attendees required, which is apparently around 30. Our leader Catherine said we got up to 16 before winter decimated the numbers again, but I have never seen that many there. Today we had 5. It doesn't bother me, now that both kids are at school I can go to the Wednesday lunchtime one. It will be with a different leader, which is a shame, but I'm sure they are all nice. I will be good to have a bigger group. Catherine asked us to keep coming to this one until it finishes.

Today's meeting was about overcoming obstacles. Trying to remember, I certainly don't feel like I came away with any strategies. We talked more about the meeting closing. Now I consider the matter; I think that Catherine is a lovely person, very friendly and helpful, but maybe not a particularly inspiring leader.

She handed out a free sample of a WW chocolate peanut bar and I ate it after the meeting for morning tea. It was like a tiny Snickers but a bit fake tasting. I am really not a fan of pretend sugar. I wish I hadn't wasted 2 PP on it, I would have enjoyed a 0 PP piece of fruit more. While I was walking around the supermarket I was given a free square of Lindt salt chocolate -- I don't regret that one! -- by the same lady who has given me the same sample at least twice before. But I don't mind trying it again.

I am feeling a lot better, a little tired and snotty but generally fairly well. Unfortunately my recovery has coincided with that TOM so I still don't feel at my best. Nevertheless, I am confident of feeling good for my birthday.

I am fully committed to tracking and eating within my ProPoints, so I need to go back to the basic strategy of adding more fruit and vegetables. I will do a little gentle walking over the weekend and then start at the gym on Monday at whatever level I am ready for by then. I will enjoy my birthday without going overboard on food treats.

WW weigh-in 13: 77.6 kg; up 0.8 kg

Friday:

I managed to get to my WW meeting this morning after missing the last two due to flu and/or laziness and/or fear of a gain. I always enjoy them when I do go so I need to keep that up. I had a gain of 0.8 kg over those three weeks which was totally expected -- of course that doesn't make it ok!

I can't really remember the topic for today's meeting. The weekly magazine cover says "How to get the most from tracking" and we did talk about how important tracking is, but also other things. I guess we did talk about tracking food, exercise, and emotional state. We were given homework of reading through our weigh-in books and doing the little exercises like writing a letter to yourself.

Today at the shops I saw one man so hugely obese he was in a motorised buggy, unable to walk, and one child of around ten whose neck was as wide as her face and whose arms stuck out at angles from her body because of her bodyfat. Try telling me again you can be healthy at any size? That little girl's parents should be up on child abuse charges.

I get regular emails from author Holly Lisle who runs a writing course, today's topic was the difference between goals and expectations. It was an excellent coverage of that topic and I would copy it here except she expressly forbids doing that, she provides a link to her website:
but the email was actually much better, I think, than this formal post. Anyway; she talked about how a goal is saying you will write a book in a year, an expectation is that a publisher will accept your manuscript. The first is under your control, the second isn't. Confusing expectations for goals can cause much heartache.

This can obviously be applied to weight loss as well. My goals are things like to stay within my ProPoints and do a certain amount of exercise each week -- things under my control. My hope/expectation is to lose weight each week and eventually get to my goal weight. Those things will (hopefully) come in time, but I can't set a goal of losing x amount per week because I am not 100% in control of that. Even if I do everything right, bodies have will sometimes retain water, cling to fat, build heavy muscle etc.

A long list of goals can be a bit daunting, but as usual my weight-loss related goals are:
# Drink at least 6 glasses of fluid a day (it is 5.30 pm and so far I have had 2)
# Track everything I eat and also my exercise
# Earn 50 activity PP a week
# Go to my WW meeting every week even if I don't want to
# Keep within my daily + weekly PP but not use my activity PP, meet the food goals of fruit and dairy etc

That seems like plenty to be going on with.

WW weigh-in 12: 76.8 kg; down 0.4 kg

Friday:

Incredibly, I am down 0.4 kg since a fortnight ago! My weight had crept up most of that first week, got it down a bit, then up again while we were away, down a whole kg these last two days since we got home. If only I could be consistent!

In hindsight, although we ate out a lot last week I rarely ate the whole meal. In fact, aside from a couple of breakfasts and the two McDonald's visits, I would say I generally ate around half of what was on my plate. I stopped when I was full. I only had dessert twice, hardly anything between meals, three alcoholic drinks. So I actually did really well under the circumstances. Without struggling or even thinking much about it -- even better! Instead of stuffing myself, because it was delicious or expensive or in front of me, I ate as much as I needed then stopped. I avoided the uncomfortable over-stuffed feeling I am so familiar with from the past. Go me!

The meeting today was about breakfast, renewing my committment to find something filling and healthy. I copied down a recipe for wholewheat pancakes with ricotta and berries. Only half a dozen people there today, but a really friendly and chatty meeting. Very enjoyable. And one of our leaders (the one that weighs us in not the one who talks and I'm afraid I've forgotten her name) just had a photo shoot to be in the WW magazine as a success story so that is awesome. Can't wait to see the 30 kg heavier "before" photo as she is so slender now it is hard to believe.

I did the grocery shopping and included a Jarrah hot chocolate trial pack with different varieties. I love hot chocolate but usually make it with milk and it turns out about 6 PP, you make this one with hot water and it is 2 PP. I had one (dark Belgian decadence) after lunch and it was really nice. Not watery at all. A lot of warming chocolately taste for the same PP as a freddo frog or mini Milky Way.

Speaking of water/milk, I have seen from a few sources that I should probably try making porridge with water rather than milk. I'll give it a go one day. I also bought quinoa flakes today, since I like quinoa so much, that you can use to make a kind of porridge.

I didn't end up buying the 5 kg/5% reward charm as I was only that low for one day, but I hope to get down to that again this week. And then ...

As everyone knows these days, goals have to be SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, ... um ... ok I looked it up and there are a few variations but I'll go with realistic and time-bound.

There is just over six weeks to my 42nd birthday, and no major obstacles between now and then. I want to lose 5.6 kg, nearly a kg a week. I admit my past record makes this a big target, but attainable nevertheless. Aim high! 5.6 kg would take me to 72.2 kg (at WW), and my 10% weight loss.

How am I going to achieve this? In essence, follow the WW plan. Stick to my points, exercise. Fruit for snacks, lots of vegetables to bulk out meals, limited treats. In particular I need to work on: breakfast (I have a few ideas to try as I've mentioned); drinking six glasses a day -- this is a constant struggle for me; and exercise -- I want to earn 10 activity PP five days a week. Yesterday this meant 50 mins of Zumba (moderate level exercise -- the Kinect says I burned more than 900 calories which is ridiculous, more like 400 at the very most and the WW formula probably gave me 200), 30 mins of Just Dance 3 (moderate, I am slowly working on getting 5 stars in everything), and 40 mins of walking (low). Of course I could also spend a lot less time doing a higher level of intensity.

I can do this. I can lose weight, even while going to restuarants and parties. I can make time for exercise. I can do it!

WW weigh-in 11: 77.2 kg; down 1 kg

Friday:

Back down to 77.2 kg at WW. I was a little surprised to only lose 1 kg, considering I was down 1.9 kg mid-week, but it is TTOM and I have been eating a bit too much chocolate as well as retaining water or whatever. Anyway, 1 kg is great.

The meeting was about ... um ... oh, I know, planning for eating out. Advice about looking at menus online and deciding what to eat before you get there, avoiding deep fried and creamy foods or extras like bread rolls. We had a look through the WW restaurant book and a few things were surprising. Like you often expect seafood to be the healthier option, but a seafood burrito was much higher in PP than a beef one -- it probably had a creamy sauce rather than a tomatoey one. The highest point item I found (apart from 69 PP for 300 mL of some kind of sauce but who has more than a cup of sauce in one sitting?) was the French bean casserole cassoulet which was 29 PP -- more than my whole day's allowance. Lucky I don't like beans.

It was a slightly unusual day. I had been warned by my eletricity provider that power would be off from 9 until 4 so I planned to stay away from the heaterless computerless house. It got down to below freezing last night and after walking the kids to school I was feeling chilly and hoping for a hot cup of tea before I went out. The power was still on when I walked into the house at 9.10, I turned on the kettle ... about 5 seconds later the power went off. Damn.

After my WW meeting I went to the shopping centre. I had finished reading a book the day before and decided to buy one and sit in a cafe, but my bookstore didn't have any of the three I particularly wanted. I bought a different one after quite a lot of deliberation -- at least I wasn't in a hurry -- and then wandered around the centre and bought the kids some new winter pyjamas & stuff before sitting with a cup of tea. Had a failure of communication there where I didn't get any milk but got that sorted. Went and had all the hair ripped out of my armpits with hot wax. I don't usually really enjoy chatting to beauticians and hairdressers and the like, it's all just boring small-talk, but this girl and I managed a fun chat that included her fear of mice and how snakes could get caught in a hen house because they couldn't fit back through the wire after swallowing the eggs whole.

Back to the shops and tried on a few clothes with no success. There were some beautiful winter coats but I still can't easily get into them due to my stiff shoulder. There has been a recent big improvement, I can now almost touch the small of my back with my left thumb, but I can't still put on my own bra or -- as I discovered today -- put on a fitted coat. I had lunch at Subway then did the grocery shopping. Although I did University-level mathematics, today I calculated that 10.30--2.30 was 3 hours and I tried to leave without paying for parking, neccessitating the person behind me backing up and me doing an eight-point turn to get out of the exit lane so I could go back and pay. Anyway, finally home just before child pick-up time to find the power had recently come back on (the CD player was part-way through Cher's greatest hits). Got the heater on and strolled out to fetch progeny. My neighbour Ian, raking autumn leaves in his front yard, asked if I had checked my mail today. Apparently we are having another power outage Wednesday week! His neighbour on the other side is quite irate as they are all down with the flu and sitting in a freezing house isn't helping. Although, now that I think about it, they have an open fire than stinks up the neighbourhood so I'm not sure what they are complaining about.

All of my food today has been a little bit too much -- all the meals a bit bigger than they should have been and then Cadbury's brought out a new variety of chocolate that I bought today but was going to save until I had the PP for it. Ahem. It was very good.

WW weigh-in 10: 78.2 kg; up 1.0 kg

Friday:

I went to my Weight Watchers weigh-in this morning, prepared to have gained half a kilo or so. I gained a whole kilo over the past two weeks! Arg! That means that in my 12 (I think) weeks in WW I have lost a grand total of 2 kg. Not good. But on the positive side I have been good today. I bought lots of healthy food, planned my menu for the next few days, and ate well today. And I tracked everything! Of course it is much easier to track when you are not having to admit to a plateful of fat and sugar.

This is my idea of a balanced day's eating:
Breakfast; 1 slice low-GI high-fibre toast with peanut butter (protein and carbs!) and a glass of water with a squeeze of lemon.
Lunch; Spicy noodle soup with lots of vegetables.
Afternoon snack; Watermelon, cup of tea with milk and sugar, 100g yoghurt.
Dinner; Oven-baked barramundi (white fish) with lemon, potato roasted with olive oil, whole small cucumber, half a tomato.
Evening; Grapes, water with a squeeze of lemon.
I only had one serve of dairy, but I still have 4 PP left. I don't plan to use them, I don't plan to eat in the evenings. I do need to watch that, like many people I avoid too much dairy because it is high in fat/calories/PP. But the main problem here is not enough fluids. Insane, especially when I have a sore throat. Even including the soup, that is only four drinks today when I should be having six as a minimum. This needs to be a priority. Still, I'm proud of the 5 vegetables and 2 fruit.

Unfortunately I didn't exercise. My throat is quite sore again today, just when I thought I was over my flu, and I just heard that a neighbour I spent time with two evenings ago is down with a high fever ... more germs! I totally need to get over this! I haven't exercised for over a week now. This morning I just wanted to spend the day in bed. Yesterday afternoon I fell asleep in the audience of the live performance of James and the Giant Peach that I took the kids to. I guess I'm not totally better yet.

I didn't stay for the WW meeting as I had the kids with me, but the Leader gave me the handout for a challenge she was introducing, basically 21 days of getting back to healthy basics. This week is preparation week where we are supposed to menu plan and re-read our orange folders and write down our goals for the challenge etc; then the following three weeks we have to stick to our ProPoints and exercise five days a week -- things we should be doing anyway but it really suits me at the moment as I get back on track.

April has been a bit of disaster, but May is going to be great!

I need to find some new recipes though. I have a few heathy meals that I like, but my old repertoire included a lot of cream and cheese and frying. I subscribe to the WW magazine and also have one of their cookbooks but very few of their recipes appeal so I've mainly been modifying less-healthy options. I need to find or create a few more. They had some WW brand sauces on special this week but I'm not really interested in something made of artificial ingredients, no matter how low in ProPoints. Catherine, my leader, gave the kids a packet of salt & vinegar rice crackers each while we were waiting and they really enjoyed them but I passed -- I don't really like s&v and they weren't in my plan for the day. All rice crackers are pretty low in PP anyway and most brands cost about 1/3 as much as the WW ones.

I did, however, indulge in the taste-test of the new Yoplait yoghurt formula in the supermarket and I liked it enough to buy a tub of the raspberry. But as usual I was shocked by the PP value; 3 PP for only 100g -- about half a normal serve. Yohurt is okay, and I feel like it is healthy and virtuous, but I would much rather have 30g of full-fat cheese for my 3 PP of dairy than a few mouthfuls of yoghurt. I don't want to buy the low calorie ones full of artificial sweetners and who knows what else, so I guess I'll continue to occasionally buy new brands of yoghurt but rarely eat them. Tim has yoghurt nearly every day, luckily, so it isn't wasted. I occasionally get those little Yakult drinking yoghurts, which are delicious and full of good probiotics and things, but my kids like them so much I don't get many for myself. They are very expensive. But they taste like melted vanilla ice-cream.

I look forward to a good night's sleep and a healthy & restful weekend.

WW weigh-in week 8: 77.2 kg; sts

Friday:

I went to my Weight Watchers meeting this morning and, as expected, my weight has remained the same over the past two weeks since I was last weighed. I call this a win, considering Easter happened in the middle. The meeting was about how important tracking is; I already do it but it was nice to chat about.

I didn't do a lot of exercise over the past week; Easter, sunburn, a pulled hamstring and then Rift (more on this later) intruded. But I bought two new Kinect games -- Biggest Loser and Zumba -- and have tried them both. The Biggest Loser one is a series of exercises; jumping jacks and push ups and the like. I found it quite challenging but a bit boring. There is no fun music or game to it, just following the moves on the screen. The best part is that it tracks your progess. It scanned my body and was amazingly accurate in measurements, and put me through a test to check my level of fitness before creating a custom program. I plan to do the routine sometimes, but it is not very inspiring.

Zumba, on the other hand, was great fun. I have done classes in the gym and liked them at first but the instructor went in a direction I didn't like with routines I didn't enjoy so much. The best thing about the Kinect version is that I can put together my own playlists of my favourite tracks. I just need to get familiar with them first. I did a "short" routine today -- it turned out to be about 20 mins -- and then some single tracks and got 4 or 5 stars for all of them. I recognised two from the gym, the rest were new to me. There seems to be quite a lot of choice, and each track is rated for its energy level.

My sunburn is fine now, but my shoulders are peeling. Urg.

The main reason I haven't done a lot of exercise is my newfound Rift addiction. Tim has been playing this computer game since it came out quite a while ago and has often suggested I would enjoy it but I wasn't ready to plunge into anything new. I'm rather glad I didn't while I was working on big projects. I've been playing a lot since I started on Monday, and it's been hard to drag myself away to do anything else. I need to pull back a bit.

School holidays started at 3 this afternoon, so the kids are home for the next two weeks and we also have various family members visiting over that time. I'll have to plan lots of activities. I'm going to make sure I serve healthy meals not the usual cream-laden "company" dinners.

Although I have only lost 3 kg so far on WW, I have lost 7 kg overall since my highest weight last year and I am much happier in my body. My breasts stick out more than my stomach again!

WW weigh in week 8: 77.2 kg, down 1.0 kg

Friday:

I missed last weigh-in so I think this should be week 9 but the leader said they just write it in as the following week without skipping. Thus it is officially week 8, and I lost 1.0 kg over 2 weeks which is a good average. In reality I gained in the first week then lost a lot then regained a little.

Starting weight: 80.2 kg
Week 8: 77.2 kg (down 3.0 kg)
5 % goal: 76.2 kg (only 1.0 kg to go!)
Goal weight: 58 kg

The meeting was about how supportive friends and workout buddies can make a difference. We were supposed to think of a healthy person we would like to emulate, but I couldn't really think of one. I mentioned my husband Tim who exercises regularly no matter what, but I don't have anyone who's food habits I admire particularly. I suppose a couple of guys who come to supper will turn down unhealthy food when they are in training for something, but eat junk other times. That seems like a reasonable way to live.

If I constructed an imaginary perfect person (in terms of their relationship with food and exercise), they would behave something like this:
Healthy food most of the time without being fanatical, treats occasionally when they felt like it without feeling guilty, splurges for special events without stressing about it but also without going totally overboard. Aware of their body's nutritional needs and hunger signals. Eats a balance of foods without having to keep score. Not always thinking about food and what they are going to have at their next meal or what they can and cannot eat.
Exercises most days at a variety of activities and a variety of different intensity levels, enjoying exercise and finding things they like rather than having to force themself, taking time off if needed for injury or illness without stressing, always improving and meeting new targets and goals.

So I guess that is the person I would like to be.

I bought my two new Pandora charms; one with silver filigree butterflies and one with purple enamel hearts. I bought and ate a banana, shopped for some kids' clothes, did the grocery shopping. Got home unphased by the time (12.45 when I like to have lunch at 12) and cooked up a chicken stir-fry with lots of vegetables and satay sauce.

I'm learning.

WW weigh-in no. 7: 78.2 kg, down 0.3 kg

Friday:

I basically lost what I gained last week, giving me an overall loss of exactly 2 kg. While I am happy with that considering the week I've had, I am no longer going to be happy with settling for a small loss after my own bad (and completely within my control!) eating. From this day forth (I shout to the heavens) I will get my eating under control. Events like a weekend away will not be an excuse to go back to bad habits. This weekend we will have a couple of houseguests but I have planned mainly healthy foods that I would be eating anyway. For snacks I will serve a cheese platter, fruit, and some biscuits that I don't like (but my husband does).

I really enjoyed today's WW meeting. It was about not depriving yourself as that is not sustainable over the long term. I was just thinking about that very topic yesterday, I have bought a few different little "treats" in mini serving sizes; like freddo frogs and diet mousse, all around 2 or 3 PP each which I can fit into my week. It was quite a lively meeting, we had 3 new people join today and the guy who came last week turned up again, so it is no longer all elderly ladies. The youngish man is the only guy there and also the biggest person. He didn't say a word last week, and I was sitting directly in front of him so not a good position to be welcoming, but today I was almost next to him and included him in my little cluster when we had a group discussion and he was quite willing to chat and contribute. The other new people were cowering right up the back of the room so I didn't get to talk to them. The annoying lady wasn't sitting near me and she barely said a word today, which was good; in fact I think I spoke up most! This meeting is a new group in a new timeslot this year so it is still small, I hope it continues to grow. I shall feel quite the veteran soon.

I finished shopping for my husband's birthday presents and did the grocery shopping. I always get home for a late lunch on Fridays and I'm usually starving but I don't give in to the lure of the food court. I take some fruit or other healthy snack with me for morning tea after the meeting then just wait until I get home.

I'm feeling a bit tired and headachy this afternoon but it is so nice that I finished one project last night (at 10.30 pm!) and I don't start the next until Monday. No pressures. I'd go and have a nap but I have to pick up the kids in half an hour. Maybe I will after I get them.

WW weigh-in week 6: 78.5 kg; up 0.4 kg

Friday:

This was my first gain, and it was not unexpected. Firstly because I had been eating a lot and it was also TOM, but secondly because I weigh myself daily at home! Of course I don't want to regain what little I have lost, but I am ok with it. Just need to refocus and get back on track.

I stayed for the meeting (about celebrating success) and enjoyed it. I celebrated having earned over 100 activity ProPoints this week! Friday is my busy running-around day, plus I had sore toes and ankle from where my sneakers have been rubbing, so I didn't exercise.

(actually written Sunday, but I wanted to separate this from the post about the weekend)

WW Week 5: 78.1 kg; down 1.1 kg

Friday:

Woo hoo! 1.1 kg! A nice balance for last week's small loss of 0.1. So in my first 4 weeks of Weight Watchers I have lost 2.1 kg. Perfectly on track for 0.5 kg (about 1 pound) per week.

There is itself is a milestone. I stayed on a "diet" for a whole month! One that allowed me my little splurges, to be sure, but still a big change to my usual eating habits. And I stuck to it! Under my ProPoints every week. This has meant a lot of resisting junky foods. For example, I've had some little fun-size packets of Burger Rings left over from D&D sitting in the cupboard for about 3 weeks. I had one packet in that time, as a tracked and budgeted treat. This afternoon I thought about having the last one. I got it out and looked at it. I could have had it, that would have been ok. But I put it back, and decided to go the healthy option of a bowl of home-made tomato soup for the same number of PP. Then after school the kids had a playdate at a friend's house. I had a cup of tea and a slice of watermelon. There were several varieties of biscuits offered. I looked at the mini oreos and knew that I could have one at any time if I really wanted it. But I wasn't hungry, the watermelon was lovely, I just didn't need a biscuit -- however small. So I didn't have it. This is such a big change for me.

To celebrate a whole month of Weight Watchers I bought myself another charm. It is a very pretty one, purple enamel flowers. Now I have four! Of course I won't get a charm for every month I stick to WW, just this first one. I will have other goals to reach.

Exercise is one, of course. Illness disrupted my routine so I didn't reach my exercise goal for February, but I plan to in March. 21 activity PP per week. Or more! When this endless rain stops I also want to get back to walking/jogging around the lake and get my time down to 45 mins. Back to the gym as well. When I finish this current work project (hopefully tonight or tomorrow!) I have a couple of weeks before the next one. I have plenty to catch up on in that time, but I will also devote a lot of time to exercising.

I stayed for the WW meeting today, it was about spicing things up to not get bored. This is not really an issue for me yet, but we talked about trying new foods and new kinds of exercise. I'm doing that all the time anyway. I didn't sit next to complainy woman today, I had a great chat with a woman visiting from Qld so I had a nice time. And lost 1.1 kg! Yay!

Starting weight: 80.2 kg
Week 5: 78.1 kg (down 2.1 kg)
5% goal: 76.2 kg
Final goal: 58 kg

BTW, my home scales (pre-breakfast, pjs & no shoes) said 76.9 kg this morning. The first time I've been under 77 kg for ages.

WW Weigh-in: 79.2 kg; down 0.1 kg

Friday:

Official Weight Watchers weigh-in today. I lost 0.1 kg, my lowest amount so far, yet I was happiest with it. I was actually thinking I might record a gain so a loss, even a small one, was a relief. It's all relative.

It means I have lost a total of 1 kg in 3 weeks. Certainly not what I was hoping for when I started WW, but as long as the numbers keep going down it must be working.

I didn't stay for the meeting today, I just had too much to do.

After feeling well yesterday for the first time in over a week, I had a bad night when my daughter kept waking us with her misery -- she has come down with a cold -- and I feel pretty wrecked again today.

WW weigh-in: 79.3 kg; down 0.4 kg

Friday:

I had my third Weight Watchers meeting this morning with my official weigh-in. I had really been hoping for a big number as I only lost 0.5 kg last week, not a big number for the first week of a new diet. But this week it was 0.4 kg. Very frustrating.

Also odd because the WW scales don't seem to relate to my scales at all. I don't expect the same number, of course -- it is a different time of day and fully dressed for WW -- but I thought the difference from week to week would have some correlation. But no. Week 1 at home was a loss of 0.2 kg but 0.5 at WW. Week 2 at home was 0.8 kg but 0.4 at WW. Oh well, I just have to get over it and get on with it.

A combination of disappointment, slight unwellness, and annoying people meant I didn't enjoy the meeting as much as other times. There was a long delay before we started, during which I was talked at by two other ladies: one around my age who seems to be a know-it-all who never shuts her mouth, and the other an older lady who blamed her low weight-loss (bigger than mine!) on too much fruit (?) and the rainy weather preventing her from exercise. Nothing so terrible there, except that she repeated these two points over and over again to everyone around her and then the leader. Very whiney and complaining. Yes I know I whine here on my blog, but you don't have to read it if you don't want to. I was trapped next to this lady!

Last week the leader had set us an unofficial goal of 0.6 kg each, but it seems no one at all reached it. I don't know if anyone actually lost weight this week other than myself and Granny Whinger. Two other people near me gained weight, not sure about the rest of the group.

Apart from that, the meeting was ok. It was about making time for yourself to get healthy. I have always carved out personal time for myself, the only problem is I don't always use it to exercise!

Ok, lets reframe the week positively (I haven't learned about reframing yet but BitchCakes used to talk about it a lot). I lost weight! Yay! Nearly a kg in the fortnight, and a loss two weeks in a row.

I have stuck to a diet successfully for two whole weeks. Tracked every day. No cheating. No private binges. Excessive unhealthy food twice a week but planned and budgeted for, other days only a fun-size milky way or WW low-fat ice cream.

Hit my exercise goal of 21 activity points. I know I can do more than this, but I have spent several days unwell. Earned a Pandora charm which I bought today.

You see, lots of good things.

What do I need to work on? More exercise. Not getting takeaway every week after swimming, trying some other options like casserole that is ready when we get home. Continue all the good stuff I am doing.

On the non-weight-loss front the big thing I need to work on is managing my work time much better, I am really struggling to get into a routine. I have work lined up for the next four months and I have to stop faffing around. Unless I work more efficiently during the day I'll have to give up some evening or weekend time, or get up earlier. That should be motivation enough!

Starting weight: 80.2 kg
Week 1: 79.7 kg
Week 2: 79.3 kg
5% goal: 76.2 kg
Goal weight: 58 kg

WW Week 1: 79.7 kg; down 0.5 kg

Friday:

I have been weighing myself at home so I knew that my weight had dropped dramatically in the early half of the week then bounced up again just before my period -- and stayed up. I was kind of dreading my official weigh-in at my Weight Watchers meeting and half of me was surprised and grateful for 0.5 kg but the other half was sad and disappointed that it wasn't a lot more. 0.5 to 1 kg is a good loss -- except for the first week or two when you expect a lot more. Hopefully next week will show a bigger loss.

Aside from that, I enjoyed my second meeting. Catherine said there was some mix-up with the topic (the hand-out didn't match the weekly topic on the website), but we talked about body hunger vs emotional hunger and how we eat when we are bored, tired, stressed etc. There were a couple more people there than last week; seven, four of them retiree age, all women.

Starting weight: 80.2 kg (fully clothed)
Week 1: 79.7 kg (-0.5 kg)
5% goal: 76.2 kg
10% goal: 72.2 kg
Goal weight: 58 kg

This week I earned 16 activity ProPoints and also had 15 weekly ProPoints left over, so I achieved both of those goals.

No title

Thursday:

Yesterday I felt pretty crampy and tired all day and got Wednesday-night takeaway again. Didn't exercise, didn't drink enough water, hardly ate any vegetables. And this morning my weight was up a tiny bit more, although that could be partly to do with my period starting.

But: despite the PMS I only ate one tiny fun-size chocolate bar yesterday. I only ate into 7 of my weekly ProPoints, which is barely more than a good day (although the content of those calories wasn't so healthy). Usually PMS sends me on an eating rampage where I somehow give myself permission to abuse my body "to make me feel better". And this morning, although I still don't feel great, I went for a walk and have had a healthy and balanced lunch. So I feel back on track.

I really want to have a good weigh-in at my second Weight Watchers meeting tomorrow. One of my focusses (foci?) today is drinking enough, I need to flush out all this extra salt.

A week on WW

Wednesday:

My official weigh-in at WW will be on Friday (and will include clothes, shoes, and breakfast) but I have still been weighing myself at home and in the 7 days I have been following WW I have lost 1.4 kg. And that is after an upwards bump of 0.4 kg this morning; due to either/or or a combination of PMS and D&D supper last night. It is still quite a nice loss.

I ate way too much last night, after having roast chicken for dinner I scraped some of the chicken fat out of the pan and ate it (I counted it as 2 teaspoons of fat) -- it was delicious though -- and then I had chocolate, apricot delight, and burger rings at supper.

On the up side I did stop eating once I had had enough, even though there was more on the table. In the past I would have eaten much more. I spent a total of 12 ProPoints on supper, all from my weekly allowance, which was well within my WW budget. I ended up feeling really sleepy and had trouble following conversations, it almost felt like I was drunk. I am noticing that when I eat mostly healthy food, I feel pretty yuck when I eat junk. I probably always felt yuck when I ate junk, I was just used to feeling that way all the time!

This morning I had planned to go to the gym and do BodyPump but it was swimming carnival day and we had to leave early (which I didn't realise until this morning) so I didn't have time for breakfast, what with all the frantic getting the kids ready and their lunches and change of clothes etc. So I had to come home after the drop-off to have my breakfast. I still plan to do some exercise, but I am feeling pretty horrible with PMS. Crampy lower back pain and feeling sad and discouraged. I think a walk outside will help more than trying to drag myself through a Kinect routine.

So, how has the first week gone? Pretty well, I think. I've stayed within my ProPoints -- aiming for the daily 26 per day and always using just a few of my weekly extra -- eating huge amounts of vegetables. I haven't banned any foods or deprived myself and as a result I haven't binged -- even D&D supper has been much better than in the past, and I haven't had any solitary food orgies. Of course there will be challenges in the future, but the fact that I have that extra weekly 49 PP to spend means that even if I do have a stumble it doesn't mean I have failed for the week or even the day. I love that. I can work it into the plan. I think WW have organised that really well -- instead of saying you get 33 ProPoints per day and if you go over you fail, they give you 26 PP per day plus 49 PP for the week to use when you like so you can have light days and save for celebrations and restaurants.

I've done quite well with exercise too, I am going for 30 mins most days but of course often doing more than that. I haven't "eaten" any of my exercise ProPoints. School holidays and then these first few days of school with starting Kindy and swimming carnival have been quite disruptive, but from tomorrow everything will be back to normal and I should be able to get into a routine.

My first Weight Watchers meeting

Friday:

I had my first WW meeting this morning. I dragged the kids along with their Nintendo DSs and they were fine sitting on the reception lounge. From next week, of course, they will be at school. I was one of only five people there (all middle-aged women like myself) plus two leaders, I don't know if this is typical. Maybe more will come next week when school is back as it is probably a mother's timeslot. One lady was new last week.

At home this morning I had weighed-in at 78.8 kg, but at WW -- fully dressed and with shoes, and after breakfast -- I officially weighed 80.2 kg. My goal weight is 58.

After a one-on-one chat which covered all the things I had learned online about the program, today's session was about Filling and Healthy foods. There is a variant where you eat healthy foods all day and don't have to track, not recommended for me yet as I need to track to learn. But filling and healthy food choices are good for everyone, obviously. I enjoyed the meeting, it was relaxed and friendly.

The leader, Catherine, asked about challenges we had in the past week. I mentioned last night's supper. I provided vegetable sticks with dip and some apple slices. And herbal tea. Other people brought lollies, wine, biscuits, and about six blocks of chocolate. I love chocolate. I had 4 ProPoints left from my day's allowance but I ended up eating 11 -- so I used 7 extra from my weekly stash. I felt that this was a bit of a fail, but Catherine gave me a smily star sticker and said I was fabulous. a) I provided healthy food, b) I tracked everything I ate, even when it wasn't ideal, and c) I made the guests take home all the leftovers so there wasn't any junk to tempt me. It was a very nice spin on the event and made me feel empowered and motivated.

I still have my headache and so don't plan to exercise today, which is a bummer.

Kids back at school next week! My exercise plan is:
Monday: BodyPump
Tuesday: Kinect
Wednesday: BodyPump
Thursday: Kinect
Friday: no exercise (WW meeting)
Saturday: BodyStep or family fun
Sunday: BodyStep or family fun

When the weather is right I may substitute a run around the lake some days. Or I might get up half an hour early and go for a shorter run locally. I'm not sure if I will renew my gym subscription in April, I'm prefering the out-of-gym activities more at the moment.

The first couple of days

Thursday:

I've been following the Weight Watchers ProPoints plan for two days (using online resources, I'll go to my first meeting tomorrow) and of course it hasn't been plain sailing.

Why "plain sailing"? In what way is untroubled sailing "plain"?

Anyway, firstly I've had a horrible headache for most of those two days. It is throbbing away in my forehead, behind and above my eyebrows, which seems to indicate sinus problems. Tim had it for a couple of days before I got it, and I don't really have any other symptoms -- no runny nose or other cold/flu indications. Hopefully it will be gone soon. I exercised for half an hour with the Kinect yesterday and it was like wading through molasses, I just had no energy. I later walked the kids to and from a playdate in the afternoon and getting up the hill was an effort. Today I didn't exercise.

As far as I can tell, WW recommendation is for 30 mins exercise "most days".

The second issue I had was that yesterday was my children's swimming lesson. This term it is late Wednesday afternoon, and by the time they are both finished and changed it is past our usual dinnertime -- and I haven't even started cooking! So I had (pre-WW) decided that we would get take-away on Wednesday nights on the way home, probably roast chicken and hot chips. So we did. It cost 19 ProPoints out of my 26, taking me over by 10 for the day. Luckily I have an extra weekly allowance of 49 to use.

Today, as the weather has turned unseasonably cold (again: it is a really weird year), I made a casserole. And realised that I can do that on Wednesday nights! With mashed potato and salad it was 11 ProPoints. I can come home to dinner ready instead of getting unhealthy take-away. Of course it won't be so nice on stinking hot days, but at least it is an option.

Third challenge will be our Dungeons & Dragons game tonight. This is traditionally my night to stuff myself with junk food, but not tonight. By filling up on vegetables today, I still have 4 ProPoints left -- the equivalent of about 2 freddo frogs -- so I can have a treat, but not too much. My contribution will be vegetable sticks and dip. I might cut up some apples too.

I just wish this effing headache would go away.

I am excited about my first meeting tomorrow.

Weight Watchers

Wednesday:

I've decided to stop struggling along alone and have joined Weight Watchers. Whatever I have been doing obviously hasn't been working and I need help. I'll be going to meetings (on Friday mornings) and tracking my food with ProPoints.

I get 26 ProPoints per day plus an extra 49 per week plus more when I exercise. I am still exploring the site and haven't been to a meeting yet so I'm not sure if they have specific exercise recommendations.

I am committing to this fully for 3 months, after which time I will decide if it is working for me. It is 1st February 2012 today. The Christmas/holiday period was challenging, but the upcoming 3 months shouldn't have any major hurdles -- Valentine's Day and my husband's birthday are just one day each.

I will still earn Pandora charms for weight loss, sticking to the plan each month, and regular exercise; plus I will come up with some specific Kinect goals like getting a score of 12,000 on JustDance3 (I think that is a "perfect" score which might not be possible -- maybe 11,800 or something?) or a platinum result on intermediate or advanced on KinectAdventures.
