Friday:
I took Jasmine to get an eye test today because she's been getting tired eyes at school and is finding the board a bit blurry. It turns out she does need glasses, so she picked out frames and we've ordered them. I remember when I found I needed glasses, a couple of years younger than Jasmine, I was very stressed at first (thinking I was going blind!) but once I got them I was amazed at how clear the world was. Trees with individual leaves not just a clump of green! Do you mean everyone else could read the board all along? I'd had no idea there was anything wrong with my sight, I thought it was normal. Jasmine's is less dramatic I think. And she doesn't seem bothered by needing glasses, several of her friends wear glasses in class.
I ended up getting LASIK surgery in my twenties and that lasted 20 years, I've only started needing glasses again recently.
I've been a bit unwell all week, two different things. Firstly bad headaches like a clamp on my temples, my left eyebrow is very sore to touch which makes me think it's a sinus problem (the tubes run just under there) and today my neck and shoulders ached and my legs were weak and I was so tired. Luckily it was an at-home day and I even got an afternoon nap.
The other thing, well that operation I had last November did "fix" my periods in that they are no longer so heavy and go for weeks. So that is good. But I still get other symptoms around that time of the month, as bad as ever. PMS that left me miserable and grumpy so that the safest thing was just to sit in a corner and not speak to anyone in case I said something I would regret or burst into tears. Pelvic pain (it comes and goes, seems worse at that time of the month but never completely gone, not helped by the operation unfortunately) teamed with backache.
But once the PMS misery was over I've felt quite happy this week.
On Wednesday I had an unfortunate day with the trains. In the morning I caught an express which was good except it went to an unfamiliar end of the city station (huge station with at least 26 platforms, some underground) and in trying to get to my exit I found myself emerging way over on the wrong side. That added a lot of walking to get back (and I wasn't feeling well). Then in the afternoon coming home I was trying to get on my train with a crowd of people (but the train wasn't full or anything) and they closed the doors in my face! I stood there with my hands on the doors saying "Hey!!" in disbelief. I looked down the platform and the employee with the whistle signalled them to open the doors again and let me in. I felt quite rejected! But at least they did let me on.

Not a great day
Wednesday:
Well it's that time of the month and even my feet are swollen up, my shoes are uncomfortably tight! I've never had that happen before, or not so I noticed. I had to dig out some old shoes that had had some of the life worn out of them. I can't go barefoot, the sore on the sole of my foot makes it quite painful to walk without padding underneath. I'm also headachy, have distressed digestion, the whole deal. I don't feel particularly moody, but we'll see if something happens to set me off!
We've been having dramatically variable weather here ever since we moved. Every week swings up and down and back up again. Today was one of the stinking hot days, with a storm in the evening. I haven't got used to the humidity here yet, Canberra was very dry. Here fruit goes bad more quickly, the bin needs to be emptied daily or it stinks, and I break into a sweat every time I move.
My hunger was weird, I ate a lot during some periods of the day, good food and bad, large portions of whatever I could get my hands on. Other times I felt nauseous and couldn't eat at all. I had two bites of dinner then had to go and lie down.
My daughter is the one with the social life at the moment. Her school has lots of end-of-year activities going on, it's the end of Primary School so I guess that is a big deal. A disco, movie day, dinner and dancing, presentation night tonight. And then the day after school finishes here Tim is driving her back to Canberra so she can attend the graduation celebration at her old school!
I didn't do much today except organise and back up some photos online, and read. I have the horrible feeling I've wasted yet another day of my life just sitting around at home, not even doing anything to make that home a nicer place to be. Then I move my head and the pain stabs back in and I think sitting around is the best thing for me today. Maybe it's not PMS. I don't usually feel like I have a nail stuck in my left eyebrow for that.

Biggest Loser
Tuesday:
I spent some time Christmas shopping today. I got a few things but was really tired and headachy and came home at lunchtime and had a nap instead of pushing on. I only have another week before the kids will be finished school and it won't be so easy to shop without them. Aiden's main present is going to be a bike (which he knows, he will help choose it), he has really outgrown his old one; not sure about Jasmine. She doesn't need a new bike even though she rides to school and has grown - she has just taken over mine! I never ride it anyway. It was actually never ridden at all, our old bikes were stolen a couple of years ago and the insurance company sent new ones and I don't think I ever even sat on it. I'll have to think of something good, if Aiden is getting a "big ticket" item like a bike then she has to as well or they will both be horrified by the unfairness.
I can't remember the details but I read something recently about children learning about fairness, it is partly innate and partly cultural. They start off knowing it's unfair if they get less than the other person. (Monkeys know that too, and will get very upset about it.) But only in some cultures do children decide it's also unfair if they get MORE, and they have to be around nine before they learn that. Aiden was quite worried the other day when we got a treat for just the two of us, until I reminded him that I'd given Jasmine an equivalent amount of money to buy a snack (it wasn't deliberate on my part, just worked out that way).
It was the Biggest Loser finale tonight. Some years many contestants have lost up to half their body weight and ended up looking very trim and healthy. This year only the winner (male) and two of the women ended up lighter than me. Even taking into account that I am short, many contestants still looked very overweight. Of course that is still better than the hugely obese they were before. Are they picking bigger contestants to start with, who can't possibly lose all their weight in six months or so (three months in the house then three at home before finale), or have they stepped back from the super-extreme exercise and dieting to a more moderate regimen?
Still headachy, early bedtime for me.

No appropriate title springs to mind
Tuesday:
I have a pimple on my nose. I need to learn to say, "No, I do not want that sugary food" in Natalie-speak!
After washing my CPAP yesterday it did that thing again last night where it wasn't expelling my outward breaths. This is not a trivial matter, it cannot be used in that state as I'd be re-inhaling my own breath and wouldn't be getting much oxygen. I'd say it was dangerous, except there is no way I wouldn't notice and rip it off. It feels like I'm suffocating straight away when it is doing that. I tried to clean the vents and make sure everything was dry and fiddled with it for a while but couldn't get it working so I gave up. And had a nasty headache this morning. I need to get this sleep thing sorted!
I finished that exercise motivation book "No Sweat". I felt like a lot of it doesn't apply to me, I don't need strategies to find time in the day or give myself permission to put myself first occasionally - although I do look after my family I already have a lot of discretionary time - and I am not trying to force myself to do kinds of exercise I hate - I already know several forms I enjoy if only I can get myself to do them.
But I did get something from it. Mainly that if I keep telling myself I should exercise for various (very valid) reasons then I'm going to resist doing it. It's like being nagged by myself, and nagging never makes you want to do something! The book's suggestion is encouraging myself to exercise because it will be immediately pleasurable. Exercise is not a chore, it is a gift I'm giving myself. Although this is true, it is hard to let go of all the should.
I drove to the library this morning (I had a huge pile of books to return, too many to carry to walk there) then walked along the lake a bit - for pleasure (or so I tried to tell myself). I did enjoy the first 30 minutes. It was bitterly cold earlier, but I had waited long enough that it wasn't too bad as long as I stayed in the sun. I listened to Katy Perry roar, and saw some ducks.
I walked for 45 minutes altogether and the last 15 to get back to the car wasn't so pleasurable, I was a bit tired and very thirsty, but overall it was a nice walk. The main thing I enjoyed was my body moving in harmony with itself.
I've been trying to reduce starchy foods lately (um, apparently except for cake. And potatoes. And some bread) but exercise is supposed to help glucose tolerance so I decided my nice walk meant I could have some pasta for lunch. I made a lovely boscaiola and ate a reasonable amount. I also had three squares of chocolate. Two hours later I tested my blood glucose. 12.8 mmol/L (230 mg/dl in the US). This is totally unacceptable, into the diabetes range. Half an hour later I checked again to see if it had gone down. 14.1 mmol/L (254 mg/dl). Even worse! That is doing my body damage. I think that is the highest I've ever seen it. Another hour later, so three and a half hours after eating, it was down to 8.7 mmol/L which is still not down into normal person range.
It's only a short time since my last official diabetes test and the doctor said to wait two years before doing another one because "you don't have diabetes" - I was 0.2 mmol/L under the official cut-off. But I am going to be more vigilant testing at home and review that decision if it seems appropriate.
Report card:
Diet: I thought good, but blood glucose results say otherwise.
Exercise: Great.
Water: Good.
Sleep: Terrible.
Mental health: Good.

Whole30 Day5
Wednesday:
I went to bed last night debating the wisdom of this Whole30 plan. Still headachy and deprived of treats. Woke up much the same, so I had a think about what it is I am cranky about.
#1 I'm sick of this headache. Is that a good reason to give up? Not yet. It is supposed to only last for a couple of days and it's been less than 48 hours. I should start feeling better soon if I stick it out.
#2 I miss junk food. Definitely not a good enough reason.
#3 I miss mindlessly snacking when I am not hungry. Definitely not a good enough reason!!
#4 I feel like I am eating too much fat, it is both a health concern and makes me feel a bit yuck sometimes immediately after eating. I queried this on the W30 forum and the moderator said that I wasn't eating too much fat, but suggested that instead of having fatty meat + vegetables cooked in fat all together I should try salad or raw veges if other elements of the meal are fatty. So I'll try that.
#5 I want milk and sugar in my tea. I am not enjoying black tea at all. Strangely enough, this is actually the biggest deal for me. Maybe because tea is so much less appealing that I am having a lot less of it, so I'm probably going through caffeine withdrawal as well as everything else. Still not a good enough reason to give up. I'll either get used to tea black, or I'll get used to no/less caffeine. And it is only for 30 days.
On the other side of things, my jeans are suddenly a lot more comfortable today, so I might have lost a little bloating around the stomach. Aside from the headache, I feel quite well today and not like I have the flu. The headache itself keeps coming and going, when it's gone I feel pretty great but when it's back I feel all cranky again.
Breakfast was a mushroom omelette with prosciutto again. Reasonably quick and easy when I don't have leftovers to eat. Lunch was chicken and vegetable soup, an apple, and a piece of roast chicken. Probably not enough vegetables, but I was full after that. Did a bit of snacking in the afternoon even though I wasn't really hungry; almonds, cashews and a banana. Dinner was pulled pork - the others had theirs in tortillas I wrapped mine in lettuce leaves with other salad ingredients. I didn't mind not having tortillas but I missed the salsa. I know how to make fresh salsa but I'll have to find a recipe for something similar to the stuff in a jar, just without the sugar. Overall I've had less vegetables today than other days, I'll work on that tomorrow. Cup of peppermint tea to finish the evening meal and I'm done.
My email has been down since yesterday evening so I haven't received today's inspiring Whole30 email yet. I need it! I got some writing done today, as my headache was much reduced in the afternoon - still wacks me in the forehead when I bend over though.
I had some tricky moments today when I just wanted to eat mindlessly but I never really came close to quitting. It's actually easier to have strict rules (no sugar! no dairy!) than to just say "eat healthier food". My nutritionist friend has recently got out of that whole area of work because it was so frustrating. Everyone wants a magic bullet, no one just wants to be told to eat a bit better and exercise a bit more. She is very much a believer in moderation. I haven't told her I'd doing the Whole30 but I did tell her I had a headache because I was detoxing from sugar. She said "eat some sugar then". I can totally see her point of view but I have struggled so much trying to, for instance, just eat treats less often. It is a slippery slope, so for the moment I am going for perfect.
Day 5 accomplished.

Whole30 Day4
Tuesday:
Definitely dealing with some kind of carb-flu or sugar withdrawal today. Headache, fatigue, clammy. Nose a bit runny. Teeth aching like they always do when I have the flu. Very thirsty and peeing a lot. Hopefully I get through this phase quickly.
We had plumbers come early this morning to eel the drains and then I got the kids to school (the short walk was exhausting today) so I'd been awake for two hours before I got around to breakfast. It was good, though, an omelette with prosciutto, mushrooms and spinach.
I had yet another Whole30-related food dream last night; at a restaurant with my dad and they didn't have a single thing on the menu I could eat. An hour after everyone else had finished eating I finally ended up with a handful of berries on my plate.
I spent a chunk of the morning out in the garden, weeding and watering the vegetable patch. I thought that the sun (cool but bright today) and all the stooping might make my headache worse, but I actually felt much better afterwards. Bit of fresh air and sunlight did wonders. And I'll count it as exercise for the day, with walking the kids to and from school.
Lunch was steak and salad with kale "chips". Kale is hard to find here, and expensive, but I bought a bag of baby kale to try these chips I'd heard so much about. Being baby leaves, I think they were a bit too thin, they were extremely crispy and fragile even though not burnt. Pretty tasty though, tossed in oil and salt and cooked in the oven.
Headache back full force in the afternoon so I had a nap before picking up the kids. We had a play-date after school and I had a herbal tea, a kiwi fruit and a handful of cashews.
Dinner was spicy roast chicken with some veges. Not enough veges, because they were too greasy after roasting in the olive oil etc spicy marinate plus chicken juices. I love me a bit of chicken fat, but I am having fat with every meal and it is starting to pall.
The formula for this W30 diet for every meal is protein + veges + fat (+ spices). Like most people, I'm sure, I usually try to cut down on fat in my diet. Now I have to make sure I have fat with every meal! The good fats, of course, for a given definition of good fats. In this case including olive oil and the fats from healthy free range animals. But several meals, like breakfast yesterday and dinner tonight, have made me feel quite greasy. Some days I doubt the wisdom of the W30. Headache is getting me down. But sticking with it.
D&D supper tonight and I ate nothing! It was my first big temptation challenge. The brie looked good, the chocolate even better. But I sipped my mineral water with a squeeze of lemon, in a wine glass, and got through the evening. Another day down.

Whole30 Day3
Monday:
Kids back at school!
More Whole30 dreams - I had eaten most of a Freddo Frog (small chocolate) when I realised it wasn't allowed and I was very cranky with myself because I was going to have to start the 30 days over again. I was very relieved when I woke up that it wasn't true.
For breakfast I had leftovers from last night, roast pork and vegetables. Although I only had a very lean bit of pork, the vegetables had been cooked in the pork fat so they were tasty but a bit greasy. As I finished breakfast, I suddenly felt very nauseated for a few minutes. Luckily it didn't last. Very filling breakfast, I certainly didn't need anything else until lunchtime.
After getting the kids to school, I did the grocery shopping. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and a huge amount of meat. I suppose the cost evens out as I'm not buying any pricy junk food. I asked at this different deli and found sugar-free bacon at a reasonable price, so that is great. I bought ice cream and topping for the rest of the family, but nothing else bad.
I'm not missing any specific food, but I do miss being able to nibble at whatever I want whenever I want. Evenings are hard. I wander aimlessly around the kitchen, not hungry but wanting to snack anyway. Aside from that, I guess dairy is what I would like to reintroduce. Just a splash of milk in my tea! I'd love some yoghurt with berries, or of course cheese. But I haven't had any strong cravings at all.
My TOM has started a day early (on the forum some people's started days early and went longer than usual, changes to hormone balance with the change in diet). Considering I'm presumably dealing with sugar withdrawal and PMS I think I am doing pretty well. Not too much mooching around this morning, after shopping I did some housework then spent quite a lot of time making lunch.
Lunch was a huge salad with lamb. I usually have cheese as well, but not today. Fat in the home-made dressing (I have to have protein, fat, and veges with every meal - even if it is a snack). Also had some strawberries, which I had before the salad so it wasn't "dessert". This salad is a bit time-consuming to make as it includes grilling the capsicum and letting it cool so I can pull of the blackened skin and cooking the lamb and cutting up everything finely. But it's yummy and full of goodness.
For exercise, I went for a walk before collecting the children. Feeling a bit old and creaky today. My left hip has been hurting a bit when I walk for the past couple of months - since I got the flu - and I was hoping it would improve now that I'm not sick any more but it doesn't seem to be getting better. It's worst when I've been sitting for a while then get up and move. It never hurts very much, certainly not enough to stop me walking, but it shouldn't be hurting at all. Might have to see someone about it soon.
Watermelon and a cup of chicken soup for afternoon tea. I don't think I was actually hungry but today I really wanted to have something. Mid-afternoon slump, a bit tired and almost depressed.
At about 4.30 a headache started to develop, and it just got worse. By 6.30 it was making driving the kids home from Jasmine's dance lesson difficult and unpleasant. That was probably the peak of pain, but it is still nasty now at 8.30 pm. I assume it is sugar withdrawal, they say to expect it. Not fun at all.
I made spaghetti bolognaise for dinner, with zoodles (noodles made of zucchini strips, with a special tool I bought on the weekend) for me. The zoodles were great, really yummy.
Another day got through! I can see myself snacking tonight, but I'll make sure it's compliant food like cashews and an apple. Or I might just crawl into bed early and try to sleep off the headache.

My first Weight Watchers meeting
Friday:
I had my first WW meeting this morning. I dragged the kids along with their Nintendo DSs and they were fine sitting on the reception lounge. From next week, of course, they will be at school. I was one of only five people there (all middle-aged women like myself) plus two leaders, I don't know if this is typical. Maybe more will come next week when school is back as it is probably a mother's timeslot. One lady was new last week.
At home this morning I had weighed-in at 78.8 kg, but at WW -- fully dressed and with shoes, and after breakfast -- I officially weighed 80.2 kg. My goal weight is 58.
After a one-on-one chat which covered all the things I had learned online about the program, today's session was about Filling and Healthy foods. There is a variant where you eat healthy foods all day and don't have to track, not recommended for me yet as I need to track to learn. But filling and healthy food choices are good for everyone, obviously. I enjoyed the meeting, it was relaxed and friendly.
The leader, Catherine, asked about challenges we had in the past week. I mentioned last night's supper. I provided vegetable sticks with dip and some apple slices. And herbal tea. Other people brought lollies, wine, biscuits, and about six blocks of chocolate. I love chocolate. I had 4 ProPoints left from my day's allowance but I ended up eating 11 -- so I used 7 extra from my weekly stash. I felt that this was a bit of a fail, but Catherine gave me a smily star sticker and said I was fabulous. a) I provided healthy food, b) I tracked everything I ate, even when it wasn't ideal, and c) I made the guests take home all the leftovers so there wasn't any junk to tempt me. It was a very nice spin on the event and made me feel empowered and motivated.
I still have my headache and so don't plan to exercise today, which is a bummer.
Kids back at school next week! My exercise plan is:
Monday: BodyPump
Tuesday: Kinect
Wednesday: BodyPump
Thursday: Kinect
Friday: no exercise (WW meeting)
Saturday: BodyStep or family fun
Sunday: BodyStep or family fun
When the weather is right I may substitute a run around the lake some days. Or I might get up half an hour early and go for a shorter run locally. I'm not sure if I will renew my gym subscription in April, I'm prefering the out-of-gym activities more at the moment.

The first couple of days
Thursday:
I've been following the Weight Watchers ProPoints plan for two days (using online resources, I'll go to my first meeting tomorrow) and of course it hasn't been plain sailing.
Why "plain sailing"? In what way is untroubled sailing "plain"?
Anyway, firstly I've had a horrible headache for most of those two days. It is throbbing away in my forehead, behind and above my eyebrows, which seems to indicate sinus problems. Tim had it for a couple of days before I got it, and I don't really have any other symptoms -- no runny nose or other cold/flu indications. Hopefully it will be gone soon. I exercised for half an hour with the Kinect yesterday and it was like wading through molasses, I just had no energy. I later walked the kids to and from a playdate in the afternoon and getting up the hill was an effort. Today I didn't exercise.
As far as I can tell, WW recommendation is for 30 mins exercise "most days".
The second issue I had was that yesterday was my children's swimming lesson. This term it is late Wednesday afternoon, and by the time they are both finished and changed it is past our usual dinnertime -- and I haven't even started cooking! So I had (pre-WW) decided that we would get take-away on Wednesday nights on the way home, probably roast chicken and hot chips. So we did. It cost 19 ProPoints out of my 26, taking me over by 10 for the day. Luckily I have an extra weekly allowance of 49 to use.
Today, as the weather has turned unseasonably cold (again: it is a really weird year), I made a casserole. And realised that I can do that on Wednesday nights! With mashed potato and salad it was 11 ProPoints. I can come home to dinner ready instead of getting unhealthy take-away. Of course it won't be so nice on stinking hot days, but at least it is an option.
Third challenge will be our Dungeons & Dragons game tonight. This is traditionally my night to stuff myself with junk food, but not tonight. By filling up on vegetables today, I still have 4 ProPoints left -- the equivalent of about 2 freddo frogs -- so I can have a treat, but not too much. My contribution will be vegetable sticks and dip. I might cut up some apples too.
I just wish this effing headache would go away.
I am excited about my first meeting tomorrow.

Rest Day
Monday
I am so glad for a day off exercise today. I was pretty exhausted after Saturday's efforts and completely wiped after Sunday's class. I am definitely not yet ready for six days a week -- let alone seven! I don't know if I will ever be ready for seven. I still have two more weeks of "warm up" before I go really hard, and I am on schedule. Eight gym sessions in 15 days is pretty damn good, and they are getting more intense.
I did better with the food yesterday, I did eat a little after dinner but only before 8 pm. Today I had lazy nachos for lunch (corn chips with salsa and lots of cheese -- no meat) which wasn't so healthy.
We went for a drive yesterday afternoon, looking for snow. There wasn't any near us (Corin Forest is only 45 mins away, they had snow there 2 weeks ago but not yesterday) but we walked around a bit, up and down a steep hill. My legs actually felt better for the stretching, they were worse when I sat still for a long time.
I had a headache all yesterday from when I got home from the gym, and still had it this morning but it seems to have gone now. It felt like a sinus headache -- my husband has the sniffles and I hope I don't catch a cold from him.

Day Six - headache
I was feeling a bit queasy in the gym but put it down to tiredness. It still could be, of course, but I have been feeling a little nauseated on and off all day. I now also have a nasty headache. I refuse to get sick when I am doing so well.
Today I did my exercise, kept within my calories (again, only with my extra earned exercise calories) and tracked everything I ate. I've only had 1 fruit and 1 dairy and probably 1 or 2 vegetable servings, which isn't so great, also only 3 drinks so far. I might have a glass of milk in a little while. Through most of the day I only ate when I was hungry - I actually felt genuinely hungry a couple of times! - but I ate too much for dinner, beyond fullness. Perhaps not as good as day as some have been, but I have fulfilled all my core objectives which is great.
Headache and tired.
Tomorrow, Saturday, is my official sleep-in day. Yay! Tim takes the kids to gymnastics, and they don't get home until after it finishes at 9.30. Of course I get woken when they all get up, but I get to stay in bed and hopefully get back to sleep. Tim goes to a dance class in the late morning, so I will go to the gym in the afternoon.
